Rowan Williams

‘People talk a great deal about leadership these days, and it’s a word I have always felt a bit uncomfortable with.  I suppose that is because my basic question is always, “What make a real difference in our world?”  And the answer is usually not what someone has made to happen by force of personality but something that grows into new life because people have been coaxed into seeing things freshly.  That’s the job of poets, scientists, priests, visionary servants of humanity.  And this making things fresh counts for more than just effective management, and I believe it’s at the heart of what real authority means, in religion or politics or whatever.’

Rowan Williams

Former Archbishop of Canterbury, Church of England
